A RECAP OF NAIROBI’S SOLO COMEDY SHOWS – 2023

The year 2023 was a vibrant year for the Nairobi Comedy scene with comics taking bold steps all year through, what stood out for the culture is the inception of solo shows that spread out throughout the year, here’s our favorite solo shows of the year 2023 in no particular order;

  1. DOGGIES – AMANDEEP JAGDE

After close to a decade in the comedy game, Amandeep Jagde’s solo show “Doggies” was showcased at the Alliance Francaise’s Wangari Maathai Theatre. Doggies which is a jargon within the comedy scene in Kenya to refer to tries and tested material or jokes that are ready for the audience is a clever name for a solo show. Sources close to Aman and his comedy outfit Chuckle Cartel told Comedy Culture that Doggies will be taken on tour this year. All the best to Aman from us at Comedy Culture.

2. SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS(ES) – JUSTINE WANDA

Justine Wanda, who is a crowd favorite in the comedy scene showcased her solo show “sorry for your loss (es) at the Cheche Bookstore to a sold out audience. The show which delves into dealing with grief was a well curated and crafted show for her cult fans who said it was the best work of Justine’s they had seen yet.

3. BUT SERIOUSLY THOUGH – ADAN ABDI

Adan Abdi pulled a surprise to many when he announced his solo show “But seriously though” and went on to perform it to a sold out show at the Wangari Maathai Theatre inside Alliance Francaise Nairobi and later in Mombasa.

4. VOICES IN OUR HEADS – ERIC LU SAVALI & GREG WAHOME

Eric Lusavali teamed up with Greg Wahome to showcase an electric show dubbed “Voices in Our Heads” to a sold out show at the Brioche on Rhapta Road. This concept of a two man show was experimental and proved successful, sources close to Punchline comedy club, who were the producers of the show, say that there are plans to have other editions of the show.

We look forward to an even better 2024 with more solo shows in line from different comedians in the Nairobi comedy scene.
