If you are a true Kenyan comedy fan, then you must remember the crazy post-covid comedy night Tuesdays at Club Number 7, along Koinange Street. In the famous words of Wiz Khalifa, those were the days, hard work forever… ok, wrong context.
Initially a tough room, by any comedian’s standards, Number 7 eventually grew on performers and audiences alike, even going on to serve as host for the Showmax roast comedy show, Roast House. When comedy history is written, Number 7 as a comedy room will no doubt get a dedicated chapter, or at least a page.
But just like all good things, the tumultuous Tuesday Nights along one of Kenya’s most infamous streets came to an end. And like an old, sickly, retired civil servant, comedy slowly retreated to the quieter and leafier parts of the City, and that’s the last time anyone ever heard of comedy in the CBD again, or was it?
Fast forward to two years later and, alas, a new comedy room in the CBD is sprouting up, slowly but surely; and on the same street as Number 7, no less! You can’t make this stuff up!
Freaky Friday, a stand-up comedy open mic curated by Mike One, at Pete’s Cafe, happening every Friday Night is quickly gaining traction and is shaping up to be the next big comedy room in the Central Business District. This is more than a welcome development to comedians and comedy fans owing to the accessibility of the room and of course the novelty.
Even though some might say it’s still too early to make pronouncements, one thing is for certain; Friday nights in the CBD are about to get freakier, and it’s my prediction that after all is said and done and the comedy gatekeepers sit down to write comedy history, Pete’s Cafe as a comedy room will no doubt get a dedicated chapter.. or at least a page?
See you on Friday!
